Good News: FCC Forces Phones to Accept Presidential Messages (CAMPAIGN MESSAGES = PRESIDENTIAL PROPAGANDA ????)

Get ready to receive messages from the president on your cell phone. The best part? You can’t unsubscribe! Because the Federal Communications Commission has decided that you have to get those — by law. The craptastic system will debut in New York City but then spread nationwide.

NEW YORK, (CBSNewYork) – A new national alert system is set to begin in New York City that will alert the public to emergencies via cell phones.

Presidential and local emergency messages as well as Amber Alerts would appear on cell phones equipped with special chips and software.
The Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency said the system would also warn about terrorist attacks and natural disasters.

Verizon and AT&T, the nation’s largest cell phone carriers, are already on board. Consumers would be able to opt out of all but those presidential messages…

For now, the system is capable on certain high-end cell phones but starting next year, all cell phones will be required to have the chip that receives alerts.

By the end of the year, the new system will be in place in New York City and Washington and in cities around the country by the end of 2012.

Hey, great idea! Let’s have the federal government force us to receive messages from the president on our phones by the next presidential election. Messages you can’t stop, because that’d be against the wishes of the federal government. On a completely unrelated note, the chief executive of the federal government is the same president. Go figure!

How long before we get the first political-related message? Something about global warming, government funding, the threat of a government shutdown over a budget dispute, or something along those lines? Over/under is six months.

And no, the government installing chips in your phones and making the same phone accept messages from Dear Leader totally isn’t creepy, why do you ask?

Amway to close West Michigan plant, cut 100 jobs from local work force

ADA — Amway this morning announced it will close a West Michigan plant, shift production of some products to Europe and Asia and trim about 100 jobs from its local work force as part of a “strategic adjustment” process that reflects where it does most of its sales.
The $8.9 billion Ada-based direct sales company also said it will shift about 50 jobs into its Ada headquarters as it ends production at a plant in Lakeview, Calif., and eliminates 150 positions there.

“More than 80 percent of our customers buy our products outside the United States, and Amway needs to update its supply chain to reflect that,” Amway chairman Steve Van Andel said in a press release. “As part of our long-term strategy, we are moving some production closer to customers to cut supply times and significantly reduce shipping-related costs. Some of these steps are difficult, but they will help us drive long-term growth and sustain existing jobs in all our markets.”

The largest local change comes from the 2011 closure of its huge warehouse on Spaulding Avenue in Ada Township, a facility that has been underused since the company discontinued catalog sales and fulfillment operations.

The company, which has about 4,000 employees in West Michigan, said it expects normal attrition and voluntary retirement programs will likely cover most of the job cuts, “minimizing involuntary job loss.”

Amway’s announcement today said that through 2013 it will:

• Move production of several smaller product lines to Europe and Asia, reducing supply time and cost.

• Shift most production of air treatment and water treatment systems to Asia, where the majority of those products are sold.

• Shift production of some home care products to high-demand markets in Europe and Asia.

• Consolidate activities now done at its Spaulding warehouse and its California, moving some of their functions to other California and Michigan locations.

Representative Duncan Hunter wants to deport the U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants but he isn’t the only one who wants to change the U.S. Constitution.

Hunter, who spoke at a tea party gathering in Ramona Saturday, said he does not believe children born to illegal immigrant parents should get automatic U.S. citizenship (JUST LIKE EUROPEAN LAWS).

In a video posted Saturday on YouTube, Hunter appears to be taking questions from the crowd when he is asked if he would support the deportation of children born to illegal immigrants.

“I would have to,” he said.

“It’s a complex issue and it’s… you can look and say, ‘You’re a mean guy, that’s a mean thing to do, that’s not a humanitarian thing to do.’ We simply cannot afford what we’re doing right now,” he said. “California’s going under.”

“We’re not being mean,” he told the crowd. “We’re just saying it takes more than just walking across the border to become an American citizen.”

Our media partner the North County Times confirmed the statements when a reporter spoke with Hunter Tuesday.

The congressman, whose district includes parts of Poway and Ramona in North County, told the paper that it makes sense that if the parents of illegal immigrant children are deported, that their children go with them. Hunter said he also supports a bill, House Resolution 1868, that would eliminate automatic citizenship for those children.

Currently, the Constitution grants citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil.

Hunter isn’t the only politician to take the controversial stand on the hot button issue of immigration.

More than 90 congressional representatives — including Darrell Issa and Brian Bilbray, who also represent San Diego County districts — support federal legislation to eliminate automatic citizenship for children born on U-S soil.

Critics, however, say that it’s wrong to change the 14th Amendment and throw out a century of legal precedent.

“It just perpetuates what has always been the law of the land and, specifically, that no one can be denied citizenship,” said political analyst Raoul Lowery. “Because prior to the 14th Amendment, blacks — afro-Americans — were not permitted to become citizens.”

The proposal to change the Constitution would require at least one parent to be a U.S. citizen, a legal permanent resident, or an immigrant serving in the armed forces. It was introduced last year and is stalled in the Congress.

During the clip, Hunter is also heard supporting the controversial new legislation in Arizona calling it “a fantastic starting point.”

“This is a National Security issue,” he told the crowd. “It’s not complicated.”
