Classic 1920’s Motor yacht MARINER III Certified by U.S. Coast Guard

The Mariner III is still available for charter both in New England and in South Florida, depending on the time of year.

Following is the text from the press release on this vessel following certification:

The motor yacht MARINER III recently completed the process of certification by the United States Coast Guard under Subchapter T, “Small Passenger Vessels Less Than 100 Gross Tons”. MARINER III is a classic wood—constructed motor yacht built in 1926 by Winslow Marine Rail & Shipbuilding near Seattle, Washington, and designed by well-known Naval Architect of the times, L.E. Geary. She measures 116’ x 18’ x 13’ x 8’ draft. She is certified to carry 125 passengers on a protected waters route.

DeJong and Lebet, Inc., Naval Architects, Jacksonville, Florida provided design and consulting engineering services for the certification project. These services included tonnage, stability, and electrical system engineering and calculations. The reduction of the gross tonnage to less than 100 gross tons was a particularly challenging problem due to the size of the vessel. DeJong & Lebet, Inc. was able to accomplish this with minimum effect on the below decks spaces.

MARINER III operates out of Manhattan at World Yacht on Pier 62 at the foot of West 23rd Street on the Hudson River. Captain Sean Kennedy of Biloxi, Mississippi runs strictly private charters aboard MARINER III such as cocktail parties, weddings, corporate entertaining, etc. She can accommodate smaller size sit-down dinner parties of up to 80 guests. MARINER III has had many interesting celebrity charters, and is the yacht setting for numerous photos in recent “Victoria’s Secret” Women’s Lingerie & Clothing catalogs. Her first charter as a certified vessel was a birthday celebration for actress Brooke Shields. MARINER III is featured in an upcoming episode of T.V. Soap Opera “All My Children”, and is under contract to appear in the upcoming film “WIND”, being shot in Newport, Rhode Island this summer.

MARINER III was completely refitted and restored in 1979—80, by the Kennedy Engine Co. of Biloxi, Mississippi. She is powered by twin GM 12V-71N Detroit Diesels. Electrical power is provided by 50KW and 40KW GM 4—7lN generator sets. All the engines were furnished by Kennedy Engine Co. during the refitting.

Unlike some of the other Coastal route classic motor yachts, MARINER III was designed for Ocean crossings, as evidenced by her deep draft and heavy hull structure. The original Owner, Capt. James Griffiths, of Griffiths Steamship Company, traveled to China to personally select the lumber for her construction. The vessel’s hull is planked with 3″ thick teak, and her framing is a very strong wood called yackle.

The vessel cost approximately $225,000 to build in 1926. Famous actor John Barrymore once boarded the yacht and insisted on purchasing the vessel. Capt. Griffiths refused to sell her. However, he did put Barrymore in touch with the Naval Architect, L.E. Geary, and Barrymore built a sistership.

The majority of the certification work was completed by Captain Sean Kennedyhis crew, and various sub contractors right at dockside. The vessel was hauled to allow for bottom inspection and credit dry-docking for the United States Coast Guard certification. Inspection by the Coast Guard was handled out of the New York Marine Inspection Office at Battery Park in Manhattan. Drawings for the project were completed by Marine Management, Inc. of Ocean Springs, MS and DeJong & Lebet, Inc.

MARINER III is the 14th former charter yacht certification project for DeJong & Lebet, Inc. The need to certify charter yachts, which formerly operated uninspected under bareboat charter agreements, was brought about by determination by the Coast Guard that these bareboat charter agreements were not valid, and the vessels were illegally carrying “Passengers for Hire” without proper certification. Certification projects have been completed for contemporary yachts, as well as classic antique yachts, and have included wood, steel, aluminum and fiberglass hulls.

The European Union plans to ban the world’s most widely used insecticides in an effort to protect bees and other valuable pollinator insects.

The ban, approved by member countries Friday, targets insecticide compounds known as neonicotinoids (also called neonics for short). The ban is expected to come into force by the end of the year and will prohibit outdoor use of the chemicals (they may still be used inside greenhouses).

Neonics were introduced in the late 1980s as a safer alternative to older insecticides that are more toxic. Yet a growing body of research has pointed to environmental problems with their use.

Catch up on National Geographic’s Emmy-nominated series Genius: Picasso starring Antonio Banderas—Tuesdays at 10/9c—with the first two episodes available now on demand.

Neonics are very effective at destroying the nerve cells of insects that ingest them. Most corn, soy, and wheat seeds planted today are coated with neonics. But if a bird eats the seeds, they could be at risk, EPA science shows. As the crops grow, the plants incorporate the neonics into their tissues, making them poisonous to any insect that nibbles on them. Pollen, nectar, sap, and even dead leaves contain neonics. So does the soil, and because neonics readily mix with water, they’re washed into streams, ponds, rivers, and possibly coastal zones, according to an international scientific assessment called Task Force on Systemic Pesticides.

“Neonics are 5,000 to 10,000 times more toxic than DDT,” said Jean-Marc Bonmatin of The National Centre for Scientific Research in France.

Neonics have been previously implicated in sterilizing male bees.

Not only have these insecticides been linked to dramatic declines in bees and other pollinators, they’re also suspected in declines in many other insect species, along with insect-eating birds and bats. Even important creatures like earthworms are being damaged by neonics, a four-year investigation by the task force found.

The EU had previously banned use of neonics on flowering crops that are known to specifically attract bees, noting that an estimated three quarters of important food crops may be pollinated by bees.

These insecticides are used everywhere: in homes, gardens, farms, greenhouses, orchards, parks, and forests. If a product says it will kill insects there’s a good chance it contains one of seven neonicotinoids: acetamiprid, clothianidin, imidacloprid, nitenpyram, nithiazine, thiacloprid, and thiamethoxam. (A list of products containing neonicotinoids can be found on the website for the U.S. Center for Food Safety.)

The U.S. EPA is currently re-evaluating the neonicotinoid family of pesticides, and temporarily halted the approval of new outdoor uses.

Canada has also limited their use.

Iconic Woodstock Music & Arts Festival Announces the Official 50th Anniversary Celebration

Woodstock 1969’s Co-Producer and Co-Founder Michael Langannounced today the return of the legendary Woodstock Music & Arts Fair for its official 50th anniversary celebration. Woodstock 1969 was billed as “3 Days of Peace & Music,” and 50 years later, Woodstock 50 will give generations of fans the opportunity to join together in the festival’s foundational intent of harmony and compassion. The three-day event will take place from Friday, Aug. 16 through Sunday, Aug. 18 in Watkins Glen – located in Upstate New York. Lang has put together a world-class team for curation and onsite festival production. Woodstock 50 will be the only authorized commemoration of the iconic 1969 festival and will feature an amazing lineup. To commemorate the movement that defined a generation of youth, a limited number of discounted pre-sale tickets will be available to college students ages 18-25, by the end of January. The lineup and general on-sale information will be announced over the coming weeks. “It’s time to put the speculation to rest and officially announce that Woodstock 50 is happening,” said Lang. “The original festival in ’69 was a reaction by the youth of the time to the causes we felt compelled to fight for – civil rights, women’s rights, and the antiwar movement, and it gave way to our mission to share peace, love and music. Today, we’re experiencing similar disconnects in our country, and one thing we’ve learned is that music has the power to bring people together. So, it’s time to bring the Woodstock spirit back, get involved and make our voices heard.” The 1,000 acres of greenfield at Watkins Glen International and the surrounding area will make for ample space for attendees to enjoy in revelry and community, and expansive stages primed for one-of-a-kind performances. The festival grounds will also feature lodging experiences for tents, RVs, vans, and more premium camping options. “The original site in Bethel is wonderful, but much too small for what we’re envisioning,” said Lang. “Watkins Glen International gives us the ability to create something unlike any other commemorative event and something uniquely Woodstock,” he added. Watkins Glen International also has a place in music festival history as the home to Summer Jam in 1973. “It’s a beautiful location and an ideal site,” said Lang, noting that when he first saw it, he felt “an immediate emotional connection to the land.” The festival will have three main stages, bringing together more than 60 of the biggest names…

Michael Lang, Producer and co-creator of the original Woodstock Festival in 1969, is producing the official anniversary, but not at Bethel Woods. “While the original site in Bethel remains close to our hearts, it no longer has the capacity to hold a real Woodstock Festival. I’m delighted that Bethel Woods is doing events in the coming year to celebrate what we brought to life in 1969.” In the next few weeks Lang will be announcing his plans for the official Woodstock 50th Festival to bring back the much needed spirit and energy of the 1969 original. Michael Lang’s 2019 event will be separate from Bethel Woods Music and Culture Festival.
It appears that the North American festival circuit will include not one, but two Woodstock 50th anniversary celebrations in 2019. In an effort to address confusion regarding his involvement in next year’s Bethel Woods Music and Culture FestivalWoodstock Ventures, LLC founder Michael Lang has clarified that his own event will take place away from the site of the original festival.

While the original site in Bethel remains close to our hearts, it no longer has the capacity to hold a real Woodstock Festival,” Lang said in an official statement. “I’m delighted that Bethel Woods is doing events in the coming year to celebrate what we brought to life in 1969 and I encourage people to visit the Museum and concert venue.”

Live Nation and INVNT have partnered with Bethel Woods Center for the Arts on the event taking place on the site iconic 1969 festival from August 16th-18th, 2019. In a phone call with, INVNT Chairman and CEO Scott Cullather said that he didn’t know whether Lang was planning a separate 50th anniversary event as they had not spoken in over a year.

Lang has also stated that he will announce his plans for the Woodstock 50th anniversary celebration in the next few weeks.

Woodstock 50th Anniversary Concert

Now There Are Two Competing Woodstock 50th Anniversary Concerts in the Works

Digital PDF LINK:

The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts has struck a deal with Live Nation to hold a 50th anniversary Woodstock event.  Just one problem.

The event will take place on the original Bethel Woods grounds that hosted the iconic 1969 music festival.

The original gathering took place August 15-18th of that year.  Correspondingly, on August 16-18th, Bethel Woods will once again relive a concert dedicated to three days of peace, love, and music.

Bethel Woods CEO Darlene Fedun saysher foundation and the town of Bethel, New York have been talking for more than a year about honoring the anniversary.

“As the stewards of this historic site, we remain committed to preserving this rich history and spirit and to educating and inspiring new generations to contribute positively to the world through music, culture, and community.”

But peace, love, and harmony apparently has its limits.

Woodstock’s original producer Michael Lang says he will be producing his own celebration not affiliated with the 50th-anniversary plans at Bethel Woods.

“While the original site in Bethel remains close to our hearts, it no longer has the capacity to hold a real Woodstock Festival. I’m delighted that Bethel Woods is doing events in the coming year to celebrate what we brought to life in 1969 and I encourage people to visit the museum and concert venue.”

Lang previously held Woodstock anniversary concerts in 1994 and 1999. Lang says the 50th anniversary festival he’s working on will include the ideas of sustainability, activism, and social justice.

The two celebrations are likely to create a division between fans who want to celebrate at the original site and those who want to attend the festival of the original’s creator.

Aside from the anniversary weekend festival, Bethel Woods will have several other Woodstock promotions this year.  The “We Are Golden” exhibit at the museum will showcase life in the 60s and why Woodstock was such an essential expression of the times.  The museum will also hold a screening of the documentary Woodstock the Movie.

Show details, headliners, and ticket information will be provided at a future date.  Bethel Woods producers say they want to get a pan-generational show that spans the decades of music since the original Woodstock concert.
